Hi,
ReplyDeleteI am going though the Pelican History of Music. seems quite interesting. will ask u questions if i have any doubts. As i am relatively new in this subject, so dont have much references to validate the information. whatever i read here will be a great learning, I am sure.
Sunita
Dear Sunita,
DeleteHope you are having good learning experience. Feel free to ask me questions related to Music.
Thanks
hello,
ReplyDeleteThough interested in music I am not very well acknowledged with the history of human civilization and the history of music. The history of ancient river valley civilization gives a lot of information on it, but somehow i find it hard to process the information when it is in the form of long wikipedia article. I would be more comfortable if it was in PDF or word document with pictures. Again, this is more of my own shortcoming than the website's. I found origin of music an interesting read having never thought about music in this manner.
Dear Shruti,
DeleteOur actual intention is to educate you in history of Music. However music is part of our society too, so to give you a bigger picture of the society of ancient world the wiki articles were referred. "Origin of Music' is the actual learning material for the course.
thanks
As I have come to know about evolution of string and percussion instruments, what about the evolution of wind instruments?
ReplyDeleteDear Priyanka,
DeleteString and percussion instruments were totally man-made instruments whereas wind instruments were almost natural instruments. Wind passing naturally through the weathered bamboos or even caves made sound. which was noticed by early humans. they just copied the nature to produce sound from a piece of bamboo or emptied conch shell.
Let me know if you could understand.
thanks
Yes, I understand this. As we are familiar with step by step evolution of other instruments, similarly evolution of wind instruments must have a process.
DeleteMa'am
ReplyDeleteI was going through the chapter on Greek civilisation. Early on in the chapter, there is a mention that Greek music is more of Asiatic nature that European. Could you please explain the distinction between these two? I am not very sure I understand the differences fully.
thank you
If you gone through the write up you might have noticed that early Greek Nusic was Modal Music. Modes were found by just like Murchhana in indian music transposing "sa". Not only that they also had three basic scales as we had three Gramas. When you come to the next cahpter of ancient Indian music you will get to know more. though theory or system of mesopotamian and egyptian music is not available but their contemporary music hint towards the same system. Contemporary Arabic and Persian classical music also follow modal music (Like Indian Ragas). Asiatic Music is linear whereas europian music follows the system of Harmony. That was not so in ancient Greek Music. They were influenced by the system of egyptian, Mesopotamoian and Indian Music.
DeleteLet me know if the answer could satisfy your quest.
Thanks
